What is SSC??

SSC currently functions as an autonomous body that is mainly engaged in conducting competitive exams for recruitment to various posts in the SSC departments, organizations. In the previous years, SSC has conducted various exams as given below:

1. SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination (SSC CGL)

Every year SSC conducts the SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination for recruiting non-gazetted officers to various government jobs.

The examination has several Tiers which are conducted over different days with results posted after each Tier. Previous exams also included an interview tier, but following a government order, interviews have been dispensed off for all non-gazetted posts in the central government as of 1 January 2016. A computer proficiency test or a skill test was also added as a Tier for some posts. There are four major tiers for the 2018 exam.

STAGE-3 exam: Descriptive Paper This is an offline, written exam in which the candidates are made to do essay writing, letter writing, précis and application writing. The exam is held in English or Hindi.


STAGE-4 exam: Data Entry Skill Test / Computer Proficiency Test
Data Entry Speed Test (DEST): candidates enter data at the rate of 2000 key presses in 15 minutes. This is mainly for positions such as Tax Assistant. (Central Excise & Income Tax)
Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): covering the topics of word processing, spreadsheets, and making slides.

Other exams

Other exams are required for certain positions. The types included: Physical Endurance Test / Medical Examination for Central Police Organization (CPO)

2. SSC CHSL(SSC COMBINED HIGHER SECONDARY LEVEL EXAM)

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) carries out the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL, 10+2) Exam to recruit persons at various posts like: Postal Assistants/Sorting Assistants(PA/SA), Data Entry Operator (DEO), Lower Divisional Clerk (LDC), etc.
The SSC CHSL exam pattern has number of stages and at each stage a different skill is tested of the candidate.

SSC CHSL is conducted in three stages:
SSC CHSL Tier 1 – Computer Based Written Test which consists of four sections
SSC CHSL Tier 2 – Descriptive Test which asks Letter/ Application and Essay Writing
SSC CHSL Tier 3 – Skill Test / Typing Test, which is qualifying in nature

3. JUNIOR ENGINEER

The recruitment of Junior Engineers (JE) done by SSC is for Group-'B' posts in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Quantity Surveying and Contract domain. The candidate looking forward to applying for the post has must have full time degree/ diploma in Civil/ Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university with minimum two years of work experience in planning, execution and maintenance in the relevant discipline.
The following is the paper pattern of the examination conducted for the recruitment of a Junior Engineer.

Candidates who manage to clear paper 1 will only be eligible in paper 2.

4. HINDI TRANSLATOR
5. SSC GD(Constable)

The SSC conducts various exams for the recruitment of constables in various government departments. SSC conduct examinations for the recruitment to the posts of Constable (General Duty) in:
1. Border Security Force (BSF),
2. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF),
3. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF),
4. Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP),
5. Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB),
6. National Investigation Agency (NIA) and
7. Secretariat Security Force (SSF) and
8. Rifleman (General Duty) in Assam Rifles

The process of recruitment for SSC GD Constable is a 4-stage process. The following are the stages for the recruitment of the SSC GD Constable.
1. Computer – Based Examination (CBE) – This online examination is conducted by the SSC.
2. Physical Efficiency Test – This is conducted by CAPFs.
3. Physical Standard Test - This is conducted by CAPFs.
4. Detailed Medical Examination - This is conducted by CAPFs.

6. SSC MULTITASKING

SSC MTS (Multitasking Non-Technical Staff) is a national level competitive exam conducted by Staff Selection Commission for the recruitment of Multi-Tasking Staff in various central government departments, ministries and offices.

7. SSC Scientific Assistant

This is for the recruitment of a scientific assistant at the Indian Meteorological Department. The examination for the recruitment of SSC Scientific Assistant takes place in 2 parts. A candidate is given 2 hours for the completion of both the parts. There is a negative marking of .25 marks for every wrong

8. Selection Post

Selection Post are exams conducted for recruitment of for a post with very specific requirement of educational qualification. The following are the posts and their qualification requirements

1. Assistant Audit Officer- Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University
- Desirable Qualification: CA/CS/MBA/Cost
- Management Accountant/ Masters in Commerce/ Masters in Business Studies
2. Statistical Investigator Grade – II Post
- Bachelor’s Degree from any recognized University with minimum 60% in Mathematics in Class 12th OR Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with Statistics as one of the subjects in graduation
3. Compiler Posts
- Bachelor’s Degree from any recognized University with Economics or Statistics or Mathematics as compulsory or Elective Subject

9. Central Police Organisation

The Central Police Organisation exam is conducted by SSC as well for the Recruitment of Sub Inspector(SI) in Delhi Police, Sub Inspector(SI) in CAPFs(Central Armed Police Forces) and Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) in CISF(Central Industrial Security Force)The exam can be appeared in either English or in Hindi. It has a negative marking system of .25 marks for every wrong answer. The exam is conducted in three stages:

10. Stenographer

The SSC Stenographer exam is organized by SSC or Staff Selection Commission to select aspirants for the post of Stenographer Grade C&D. The Exam is conducted in two phases. In the first phase the SSC conducts a computer based mode examination of the following questions.
- General Intelligence and reasoning
- General Awareness
- English Language and Comprehension


In the second phase there is skill test where the candidate has to appear for the stenography test. The candidate will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English/Hindi at the speed of 100 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and 80 w.p.m. for Stenographer Grade ‘D’. The transcription time is as follows:

- For Stenographer Grade ‘C’: 40 minutes (English)   55 minutes (Hindi)
- For Stenographer Grade ‘D’: 50 minutes (English)   65 minutes (Hindi)
