The candidates after clearing the UPSC exam for IPS are sent to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel national Police Academy(SVPNPA) in Hyderabad for a year. The recruited candidates undergo physical training, weapon training, etc. The IPS officers also are given theoretical knowledge about the Indian Penal Code, Various Laws, social issues and management.

After the one year training at SVPNPA, the IPS Officers are then sent to their state cadres where they are posted as the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Here the ASP is here for a probationary period where they learn from their seniors about the police operations and mechanisms at the grass root level.

The officers, after the completion of the probationary period, are then eligible for posting at Senior Time Scale. This posting is done usually during the 5th year of their service at Police Services. The posts that is included in the Senior Time Scale is Additional Superintendent of Police.

Once the Officer has served the services for 9 years they are eligible for being posted at the Junior Administrative Grade. At this stage the work involved is mainly managerial in its nature. The post is that of a Superintendent in Police(SP) in district or Deputy Commissioner (DC) in city.

On completion of 13 years in services the IPS Officer is promoted to the Selection Grade Post. The post means being promoted to the post of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in District level or Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) in the cities. After serving the Police Department for 14 years an Officer is eligible for the post of Super Time Scale posts. The post included in the Super Time Scale is that of Deputy Inspector General of Police(DIG).

On additional 4 years after becoming the DIG an Officer can become the General of Police(IG). Which means an IPS Officer has to offer 18 years of total service to the Police Department to become the IG. This is the Senior Administrative Grade.

After serving 25 years at the Police Department an officer becomes eligible for Higher Administrative Grade which is the Additional Director General Of Police.

The next level in the career path of a IPS Officer is the promotion at the Apex Scale. At the Apex Scale post is the post of the Director General of Police (DGP).
